Box Office Top 10: The Help Doesn't Need Any, Apparently

Box Office Top 10: The Help Doesn’t Need Any, Apparently

The Help stepped up its game and landed itself a number one spot on it's second week.  Good for The Help!  Not sure if it's the new OnDemand function that wont let you fast forward through the 15 commercials about this movie (cowards), but it seems to us that this thing has blown UP in the past week.  Everywhere you look, it's The Help this...The Help that...They are REALLY pushin' this flick.  Even some Oscar buzz?  Really? I mean, the best part of the previews is the one part where the woman says "You a GUTLESS woman!" but other than...

Box Office Top 10: The Apes Keep Rising

Another weekend, another win for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. So for those of you keeping track, it only took 10 years for people to get over how terrible the last one was (seriously, what happened at the end? Its been 10 years and I still don't know) The Help finished strong in 2nd place, and is getting some early Oscar buzz for several of the movie's stars.  I don't know, I think  if they would have included a few scenes from Forrest Gump (where he's singing with the gospel choir) and advertised it as a Tom Hanks cameo,...

Box Office Top 10: The Apes Knock The Change Up Out of the Park

Well, we're fairly pumped about this weekend's showing.  Although slow, and reckless behind the wheel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes managed to pull decent numbers.  We were very nervous, but according to the critics, it ain't half bad.  This will come in handy when we discuss a movie night in the near future. As for the Smurfs, yes we remember waking up and watching them, but our interest along with America's really isn't there.  So they'll take what they can get. The biggest disappointment here at armovieguys was The Change-Up's weekend.  We saw a lot of potential in this, but apparently we...

That was close. It took both the Cowboys AND Aliens, but working together they were able to hold off the little blue guys for a weekend win. Captain America slid -62% from its opening, but that was still good enough for a 3rd place finish, as it pushed past the $100M mark in North America. Screenwriter Dan Fogelman (Cars, Fred Claus) received $2.5M for his Crazy, Stupid, Love script, and with solid reviews and a decent opening weekend, it looks like he delivered.

Score one for America. Captain America took on box office juggernaut Harry Potter and managed to come out ahead.  Considering that Harry Potter has made what seems like $100 billion or so over the last week, they probably aren't taking the loss too hard.  This was more like a week 17 NFL game where Team Harry Potter had already locked up the playoffs (in this case, all the box office records) and pulled all the starters after the first drive.  Still, a win is a win. Friends with Benefits starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis also released this...

The question of who would win in a fight between Harry Potter and Batman has been answered (at least until next summer when The Dark Knight Rises will probably reclaim the opening weekend record). Winnie the Pooh came out to outstanding reviews but finished 6th for the weekend as most kids were busy seeing what would happen to Voldemort. Horrible Bosses and Zookeeper both held very well (-38% and -39% respectively), then again, anything would have represented a decent hold for Zookeeper considering its opening weekend. Here's the rest of the Top 10:   [TABLE=6]

With Harry Potter looming on the horizon, Transformers 3 managed one more weekend victory before it gets kicked out of IMAX screens across the country.  Unlike Transformers 2, which virtually fell off a cliff after its opening weekend, Dark of the Moon managed a more respectable -54% drop.  Both 2 and 3 were pretty roundly rejected by critics, but, unlike 2, Transformers 3 is getting good audience reviews from those who've seen it.  Also it has 3D, which certainly helps the experience with a movie like this. Horrible Bosses continued the Summer 2011 trend of successful comedies featuring a lot of cringe-worthy...
