Tuesday Trailers: Counting on Your Support

Tuesday Trailers: Counting on Your Support

It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Trailers. Here we go:

The Campaign

ZO: Here’s my concern about the movie: Jay Roach. Not long ago, he was almost exclusively a “comedy” guy, directing the Austin Powers series, the first two Meet the Parents movies, and producing Borat, Bruno, and Adam Sandler’s 50 First Dates. In the years since, he’s taken an intense interest to almost anything political, producing and directing the docudramas Recount and Game Change for HBO, and is currently working on a drama about the Watergate scandal. This should make him the ideal candidate for the job;  a solid understanding of the political process (or at least the political movie process) would help him to understand all of the political situations and areas that can be mined for comedy, and his comedy background should help him execute it. But, coming off several non-comedy movies (including Little Fockers), there’s also the possibility that he’ll veer off course and end up much like another movie that was sold as a comedy but stopped being funny about 40 minutes in.

A few other quick thoughts:

– Is Will Ferrell doing a scaled back version of the George W. Bush impression? Or is the hair implying more of a John Edwards caricature?

– Can Zach Galifianakis really sustain a version of the Seth Galifianakis character for a whole movie? He was funny for small segments in Live at the Purple Onion, but I’m not sure how I feel about spending 90 minutes with him (Unless he can talk about The Fugees the whole time).

In, Out, or Undecided? – A movie starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis should be guaranteed an “in” vote just based on the strength of this.

ND: First question: My thoughts exactly! Is that Seth Galifinakis or Zach? (If you don’t get this, move on to the next sentence, sorry)

Jay Roach (the Director) did Dinner for Schmucks, which was recent.  Let’s not forget about that, because it’s a big time underrated, got no love movie.  Haven’t seen it in a while?  Re-watch, then critique.  Anyhoo, down to business.  I think if anyone is on a noticeable slide, it’s Will Ferrell.  It pains me to say this, but it’s true…damn it.  Let’s get something straight, Will Ferrell is hilarious.  Will Ferrell could stand in front of a camera, doing nothing but looking at an apple and I’d laugh, but he’s been in stretch mode the past 3 years.  I don’t know what it is? Take it off cruise control Will.  I mean, he did well when he was back on SNL last weekend, but it’s just been a rough patch.  Rough pumpkins for Willy.  Now, Zach Galifianakis is in a different boat.  He’s been on fire for me, BUT apparently he’s sprinkling his good movies with some snickelfritz movies, so I don’t know what we’re going to get with this one.

I just can’t get a good read on it.  I want to say it’s gonna be awesome because of Will and Zach, even Jason Sudeikis is usually a tell-tale sign of funny, but NED…I don’t think it’ll work at all.  I know it’ll have two or three funny scenes, but I’m gonna have to wait for this one to come out on Blu Ray.

In, Out, or Undecided? – Out (Can’t believe I’m saying that…)

Argo

ZO: I like what I see here. Ben Affleck has earned my $14 on the strength Gone Baby Gone and The Town. I also get a little bit of an Ocean’s Eleven vibe from this trailer; putting a rag tag group of guys together to try and pull off a crazy heist (Of course, the stakes are a bit higher when you’re trying to heist people and not Andy Garcia, but nonetheless).

In, Out, or Undecided? – In

ND: I started out nervous. At FIRST I was about to write something down that consisted of…The lights are off and they must be looking for a fuse box or somethin’ cause them flashlights they’re, they’re keeping me awake! BUT shortly in I got thrown into Argo and the world of Ben Affleck.  Good look for Ben, no? THEN Bryan Cranston and John Goodman show up to pull the thing together.  Goodman is one of the only original ripped guys left. (don’t get it? don’t worry about it)

Pretty interesting plot with the Iranians and whatnot…Plus Victor Garber as a Canadian Ambassador (did you know he’s really Canadian?…you got the job buddy!)  Might be a  little out of my league as far as attention spans go, but it does look good.

In, Out, or Undecided? – Uh, undecided…might need some Fuddrucker’s convincing.

Zombie Hamlet

ND: Ahhh, I don’t know.  I’m a sucker for zombie movies, hell anything zombies. I’ve tag teamed the COD Zombies to level 31 (Dead Serious) and I keep on playing.  I just don’t get this though.  I mean, is that Jay (Jason Mewes) leading the charge against the zombies?  Unless he’s next to Kevin Smith in a black trenchcoat, I’m not in super interested.

I see this on Netflix’s Watch Instantly in no time though…so, yeah.

In, Out or Undecided – Out

ZO: I’m guessing that after reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies someone thought to themselves “Hey, I bet that concept could work with Shakespeare also. I’ll spend the next 18 months or so finding the perfect play, carefully craft the inclusion of zombies into the larger message of the story, and then line up some big Hollywood talent to help me get it to the screen.”

/checks IMDB, sees that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is scheduled for a 2013 release.

“Nevermind, we better start shooting next weekend.”

With Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter up soon (see below) and P&P&Z slated for a 2013 release, there’s a real possibility that moviegoers will be burned out on historical science fiction in relatively short order, and this movie probably won’t do anything to change their minds.

I can appreciate what they’re going for here, and a Jason Mewes cameo is nice, but it just wasn’t for me.

In, Out, or Undecided? – Out

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

ZO: Nic has been fired up as all get out to put this movie into Tuesday Trailers, so I’m gonna stand down on this one and let him take it away (I do think it looks cool though).

In, Out, or Undecided? – In

ND: Ahh, Old Honest Abe.  Thank you Zac, and good morning to all!  Hallelujah, were’s the Tylenol!?  Doesn’t this movie look frigging sweet! (Zac voice – Hell yeah it does!) I know!  I mean, Abraham Lincoln as a Vampire Hunter sounds a bit weird, granted, but I dare anyone to watch this trailer and not get a little bit pumped.  You know what? If that movie trailer doesn’t fire you up then there is something missin’ in your life.  You eat too many salads.

I don’t want to say it’s for everyone, because it’s not, but I’m a man. I like axes and I sure as hell like historical figures layin’ down the law! I’m sorry, did you just say that Abraham Lincoln is some kind of super hero, mythological creature destroyer?  Did you just say that?  Yeah, I did.  I did say that my friend.

PLUS, they used Johnny Cash’s The Man Comes Around kind of like the movie voice guy, shit, better than the movie voice guy. Cash Forever! This one is going to be action packed and I’ll be there to witness it first hand.

In, Out, or Undecided – I’m so In!

PS – I chop down tree’s like that.

Gangster Squad

ZO: I’m not a diehard Sean Penn fan, but aside from the Sly Stallone mask he’s wearing, I think he looks pretty good in this movie. Emma Stone is suddenly the hottest thing in Hollywood, Josh Brolin is almost certainly going to be guilty by association for the upcoming MIB3, so this should be a good chance for him to redeem himself, and really, who couldn’t use a little more Nick Nolte in their cinematic lives?

Although, if I’m being honest, I’d probably be about 100x more excited for this movie if they had cast Gary Busey in that role instead.

In, Out, or Undecided? – In

ND: What’s with all the pop up shit on all the videos these days?  Can’t I just watch something on Youtube without having to click an ‘X’ fifteen times to see what’s going on? Jesus.  Alright, sorry for ranting…Gangster Squad, huh?  I’ve been hearing about this one the past few days.  I was on yahoo the other day, checking some emails from my 7th grade account wassup24_99@yahoo.com (you think I’m lying, but I am not) and I saw that Ryan Gossling’s Squad was “trending”…he was between Jessica Simpson’s baby line and something else I can’t remember…might have been Chris Bosh is a Pussy…not sure.

Anyways, Ryan Gossling trending, so I looked to see what the fuss was about and up popped Gangster Squad.  I don’t know.  It looks like he gets to fall in love with Emma Stone, again (first time was Crazy, Stupid, Love…yes, I’ve seen it…kinda boring if you must ask) and try to be a badass, again.  Am I the only one that remembers him getting beat like a drum in the movie Remember the Titans?  Doesn’t that take SOME kind of street cred from this guy?  If I’m the only one, I’ll shut up.  Whatever, I’m more pumped up about Josh Brolin to be honest.  I’ve been on a Josh Brolin kick since No Country For Old Man (well, Goonies really, but yeah).  Something about him recently.  Hell, he might be the only good thing to come out of Men In Black 3.

And let’s not forget about Sean Penn…     ….

In, Out, or Undecided? – Undecided for now, but I’ll probably see it.  It looks pretty good.
